Father Daughter Wedding Song - A Tribute To Our Parent

After the bride and groom’ dance, it’s time for us to pay recognition to our parents who have always been friends and supporters throughout the years. The father-daughter wedding dance song is played for the bride’s father to dance with her followed by the mother-son dance song. You can have 2 different songs, but it’s not unusual to have one song for both parents.

Since my daughter is only 6, this is not something on my mind for now. However, when that day comes, I hope she’ll choose any songs that bring back the memories of her childhood, or songs that I like, and not only the songs that she likes to be played at her wedding.

When she’s a very little, I used to sing, “You’re My Sunshine” to her whenever I came home from work, or whenever I wanted to put her to sleep. And for some reason, she always clapped her tiny hands even though I am very sure I don’t have a good voice. I also really enjoy telling her that story just to see her beaming eyes. And I hope she’ll still enjoy hearing that story. That song has always been special to me and I hope she’ll remember to play for me at her wedding even though I am not sure this is suitable for a formal environment.

This brings up a touchy subject.

Who get to choose the father-daughter wedding song?

I know of a friend who was really gung ho about deciding the song for her father and her to dance at her wedding. I can understand she just wanted her wedding to be as perfect as she planned it to be. The problem was her selected song was not the one her father liked. They end up having a big argument over a “stupid” issue, in my opinion.

My take on this problem is, even though it’s your wedding, but the father-daughter dance is the moment you want to honor, and to pay recognition to your father. Let the old man choose. We don’t have that many opportunities in life to have a chance to say thanks to our parent.

If your father doesn’t have any preference then you can make the decision for him. However, even then you have to keep in mind of his taste and style. By the way, it’s applied to mother-son dance song also.

Anyway, here’s a short list of my personal all-time favorites:

  • “Unforgettable“ by Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole
  • “Wind Beneath My Wings“ by Bette Midler
  • “Me And My Father“ by Cosy Sheridan
  • “What A Wonderful World“ by Louis Armstrong
  • “You’ve Got a Friend“ by James Taylor
  • Or you can listen to You're My Hero
Drop me a note if you agree or want to add others.
